To mark the celebration of Women’s Day in South Africa, we focus on an incredibly talented young lady, Hinako Shibuno. Never heard of Hinako Shibuno until the momentous victory at the British Open? Don’t feel too concerned, we hadn’t either. Her victory at one of the oldest and most esteemed Golf tournaments was celebrated by all as she lifted the prestigious AIG Women's British Open Trophy on debut, only one year after turning pro in July 2018. During the tournament, she became an instant crowd favourite through her cool, calm, fun and humbled energy on the course. Her relaxed persona was particularly evident throughout the final round where she was seen smiling and high-fiving fans, seemingly unfazed by the magnitude of the occasion.
Shibuno was born on 15 November 1998 in Okanyama, Japan in a home where both parents were professional athletes. Her golf tenure began in High School, officially turning professional in July 2018. This phenomenal 20-year-old champion became only the second Japanese player to win a major tournament after Chako Higuchi won the Women’s PGA Championship in 1977, an incredible sporting achievement.
Another leading lady deserving of a mention is our South African golden girl Ashleigh Buhai who did our country proud with a stellar performance at the AIG Women's British Open Trophy, coming in 5th place.
